AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

Red Cross Blood Drives as a Church Mission?

I think we are all familiar with our church's support of our local food pantry. It is simple to think of this activity as a mission our church family supports, for it easily falls within recognized parameters of a church mission. But do you think of the blood drives we host, as a mission? We host seven drives a year which is the amount a whole blood donor can give in a year. This scheduling is every 56 days unless we are booking a drive around a church or community event. For the most part, our loyal donor base adjusts to a few extra days.

The blood drive mission reaches beyond the needs in the Homer-Cortland area. The Red Cross lets donors know the general destination of their gift of life. Right down to which hospital received the donation. A donor may be helping someone in the western part of the state or the southern tier.

A message from our Red Cross account manager tells us that: “84% of blood donations are collected at blood drives, hosted by generous churches, businesses, groups, schools and other community locations-close to where people live and work. Each community host plays a critical role in helping to maintain the blood supply. It takes a village to maintain the blood supply. I am sending out a big THANK YOU! We could not do it without our community partners.”

We will host the next Red Cross blood drive on December 9th from 9 to 2pm. If you can be a part of that drive by donating either whole blood or double red cells, please make an appointment. Consider it a mission of the Homer United Methodist church.

"Kindness is in Your blood."
